This large hand-knotted Nepalese rug has a bold "berry basket" weave, with interlocking bands that look woven rather than knotted. Each band is striped in teal blue, moss green, brick red, burnt orange, and soft cream. The stripes shift in tone from one band to the next, which gives the pattern movement and a slightly painterly quality. The bands sit against a deep, earthy ground of rust and dark berry, so the colors glow rather than compete.
A broad olive-green border with a thin red inner line frames the field. The thick, plush wool pile has the soft luster and subtle variation in color that come with age and natural dyes. At nearly a century old, it is still dense and cushiony underfoot.
